4 Ways to Survive the Hurricane of Property-Crime

Can a solar-powered perimeter fence withstand a Category 5 hurricane?

Do you own or run a commercial or industrial business located within 500 miles of the Atlantic seaboard or the Gulf of Mexico? If so, your company’s profits are at risk of being gone with the wind, a.k.a. hurricane theft.

By the way, if you own a commercial or industrial business that’s nowhere near hurricane areas, you should keep reading; we’re about to share some pretty valuable advice, whether you’re located in the sea-breeze section of the country, or not.

As you’re probably aware, the Atlantic hurricane season is in full bloom (June 1 through November 30). For the 2021 season, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has forecasted:

        • A likely range of 15 to 21 named storms
(winds of 39 mph or higher)
        • Between 7 and 10 of these storms could become hurricanes
(winds of 74 mph or higher)
        • Between 3 and 5 of these hurricanes could grow into major hurricanes
(category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher)

We should probably note that over the last 20 years, the NOAA’s predictions are about 70% accurate — so the smart money is on them. It’s gonna get windy, folks, for sure.

The one commercial property crime that rises with the storm surge.

Statistically, most crime rates decrease during a hurricane — except for one: burglary. That’s the one crime that seems to always spike no matter which way the wind blows.

For example, in 2012, when Hurricane Sandy decided to tour the Big Apple, the overall crime rate in New York City decreased by almost 30% compared to the same time the previous year.

        • Murder dropped by 86%
        • Violent crimes decreased by 41%
        • Even car thefts fell by 20%

But burglaries bucked that downward trend, increasing by 6% during the same time frame.

When Hurricane Harvey hit Houston, Texas, in 2017, the burglary crime rate in that city jumped to 287%.

Then there’s the mother of all hurricanes: Katrina in 2005.

In the Louisiana parishes affected by Katrina, the burglary rate increased by 332.4 per 100,000 people. And it wasn’t just looters stealing TVs.

Why do burglary rates jump during hurricanes?

    The answer is simple: opportunity.

Hurricane_BlackProperty crime is almost always a crime of opportunity. When Mother Nature throws in 111-mph winds and mandatory evacuations of all the law-abiding people, that opportunity becomes too tempting to resist. Here’s what that looks like:

            • The criminals who didn’t evacuate see your valuable stuff and note that it’s unprotected.
            • There’s nobody around to witness the crime.
            • And the cops are not a deterrent; they’re too busy saving human lives.

How to prevent theft of your commercial property during a hurricane:

The good news is there are some things you can do when you realize that your business is sitting squarely between the path of an angry hurricane and a gang of opportunistic thieves.

Specifically, there are four (4) things:

Fence1. Increase the effort required to steal from you.
Hurricane thieves look for a quick way in. Don’t give them one.

          • Install a perimeter fence at least six feet high.
          • Secure it at the bottom to prevent crawlers.
          • For more shocking results, add an electric fence, too.

Lightbulb2. Elevate the risk of stealing from you.
Most thieves will think twice if there’s a chance someone will see them committing
         their dastardly deeds.

Lock3. Reduce the rewards of stealing from you.

The name of the game is, ‘Thief, I’m not worth your time.

          • Install steering wheel and trailer hitch locks.
          • Remove vehicle batteries and/or wheels.
          • Keep high-value items locked in cages.

SolarPowered4. Embrace solar power to deter them from stealing from you.

Hurricanes knock out power sources quickly — except for one.

          • Install solar-powered electrified fences.
          • Make sure your lighting is solar-powered.
          • Security cameras can also be powered by the sun.

    The Moral of the Blog

And so, as we monitor each forming tropical depression (and hope it doesn’t become big enough to merit its own name), let’s reflect on the important parts:

        • Theft during hurricanes is a crime of opportunity.
        • You can minimize that opportunity with just a bit of planning.
        • And 98% of our clients have yet to experience a break-in after installing our electrified perimeter security fences. Even during hurricanes.

So, prepare yourself and your property, and you’ll weather every storm just fine.

And if you learned something new today, how about sharing this blog with someone you know?
